Come to Porto
I am always happy to hear from curious, motivated people who would like to work with me in algebraic statistics and applied algebraic geometry at the Universidade do Porto. Whether you are thinking of a PhD, a postdoc, a Master's thesis or a short research visit, write to me, and together we can find a way for you to come.
Who I’d like to hear from
PhD students
Interested in algebra, geometry and statistics? We can prepare a PhD scholarship application together.
Postdocs
Apply for a fellowship with Porto as your host. I am glad to help you prepare a strong application.
Master's students
Thesis projects for students at Porto, and exchange visits for students from elsewhere.
Visitors
Short research visits and seminar talks.
Possible topics
Algebraic statistics: graphical models, causality, maximum likelihood estimation, models with hidden variables.
Applied algebraic geometry: geometric modeling, computer algebra, toric varieties, virtual resolutions.
How to get here
PhD positions. The Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) opens a call for doctoral scholarships every year. Contact me well before the deadline so we can shape a project and an application together.
Postdoctoral fellowships. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships let you choose your host institution, and Porto can be it. FCT also funds researcher contracts through its Scientific Employment Stimulus calls.
Students. At Porto, I supervise Master’s theses on the topics above. Students from other universities can come through Erasmus+ (see below).
Visits. Write to me with your dates and what you would like to work on, and we can look for a way to make the visit possible.
Erasmus+
Erasmus+ funds stays at the Universidade do Porto for students and staff of partner universities.
- Master’s students can study in Porto for a semester or a full year, and can work on their thesis with me during the stay.
- Traineeships let students and recent graduates do a research internship of two months or more.
- PhD students can come for a short research stay, from a few days to a month, or for longer periods.
- Academic staff can come for short teaching or training visits.
How to apply. Your home university needs an Erasmus+ agreement with the Universidade do Porto. Ask your university’s Erasmus office first, and write to me so we can plan the project. FCUP’s office for incoming students is at incoming [at] fc.up.pt, and its international cooperation page has more information.
Why Porto
The mathematics. The Centro de Matemática da Universidade do Porto (CMUP) hosts research in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, analysis, probability and statistics, with a lively seminar programme and international visitors.
The city. Porto sits on the Douro river and the Atlantic coast. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the food is excellent, and the climate is mild all year. Life here is affordable compared with most western European cities, and the airport connects you directly to much of Europe.
The country. Portugal is safe and welcoming, and English is widely spoken at the university and around the city.
